Walking

Last week, I decided that I would walk to work. I'm teaching summer school, and I only live about a mile or so away....so......this is how it happened:

I woke up, feeling mad about gas prices. It's getting ridiculous. At the same time, I had great difficulty fitting into my pants. Why not kill two birds with one stone and walk to work? After lightening my load (or not carrying a purse, just the laptop), I set off.

It felt great! The weather was wonderful, and our tiny town really is beautiful. I was busy enjoying when I began to notice the expressions of people as they passed me in their cars. Surprise, curiosity, disdain, and just plain old nosiness were a few of them. I couldn't help but laugh.

The number of people who honked at me: 4
The number of people who saw me later, and said, "Was that you?": 9
The number of times parents of students in my class offered me a ride: 1
The number of people who thought my car was broken down: 12+
The number of times my own kids passed by and offered me a ride: 2

The cool thing was that every single person I passed while walking greeted me with a "Good Morning!" Of course, this is a town where minding your own business is considered anti-social.

This is a small price to pay for the luxury of being able to walk about safely. It's just one more reason this is a great place to live.
